CURRENT STUDENT FAQs

MAY PARENTS OBSERVE CLASSES?

Observation is always encouraged at Ballet Lubbock. If your dancer is in the Covenant Studios North and South, you may observe them directly through the windows to their studio.

If your dancer is taking class in an upstairs studio, we invite you to sit in the lobby and observe them on-screen. If you ever have questions about what you’re seeing, please reach out and let us know!

Additionally, there is one week per semester when parents and guardians are encouraged to join their dancers in class. Find Dance-with-Me dates here.

WHAT IS THE ATTENDANCE POLICY?

Attendance is critical to consistent progress and advancement in the School. Students who are injured are expected to observe classes and take notes. Poor attendance (for any reason) may jeopardize a student’s placement, participation in productions, promotion, or financial aid.

Three absences per year may be made up within the month of the absence by emailing attendance@balletlubbock.org. Classes are made up by attending another section of your level, or if your level does not have another section, attending a class from the level below.

If your child is injured and will miss a prolonged series of classes, we ask that you provide us with an applicable doctor’s note. Please refer to our attendance policy for more information.

HOW DO WE KNOW IF THE SCHOOL IS CLOSED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER?

When the area is experiencing dangerous weather conditions, we assess canceling classes. A text message and email will be sent out to the phone number and email you provided when registering.

HOW DOES A STUDENT GAIN PLACEMENT OR ADVANCE?

Students under the age of 6 are placed according to their age. Students over the age of 6 with dance experience are placed according to their ability as evaluated by the Ballet Lubbock faculty. An evaluation appointment is required for new students ages 7 and above. The placement of students is at the sole discretion of the faculty of Ballet Lubbock. Ballet Lubbock reserves the right to change the level in which a student is placed whenever appropriate.

Our goal is always to do what is in the best interest of the dancer physically, mentally, and emotionally.

IS IT COMMON TO REPEAT A LEVEL?

Yes, very common! Each student can expect to repeat a level at least once during the course of their training at most pre-professional ballet schools, and this includes Ballet Lubbock.

Moving through levels too quickly can have a detrimental effect on student training and can hinder progress at more advanced levels. Please be advised that even the simplest exercises are challenging when executed with precision.

We take proper level placement very seriously. We encourage parents to be supportive of our professional opinion, as it is in the best interest of the students.

WHEN MAY A STUDENT DANCE EN POINTE?

Female students are evaluated for pointe during their Level 6 year. For safety and injury prevention, Ballet Lubbock faculty take the decision to place a student en pointe very seriously.

Keeping with that responsibility, we have a series of exercises and physical tests based on technique and strength to determine a students’ readiness to go en pointe. The evaluation measures both flexibility and strength. The final decision to place a student en pointe, based upon the pointe evaluation and classroom observation, rests with the Ballet Lubbock faculty.

The faculty will notify students of the pointe evaluation during the school year.

DOES BALLET LUBBOCK OFFER MODERN OR JAZZ?

Yes! Students are required to include modern/contemporary dance training as part of the Ballet Lubbock curriculum. When students reach Level 5, modern dance class is included as a required class during the week of training.

Jazz classes are optional for dancers in Level 4 and are offered in addition to ballet or as an alternate style of dance to pursue. Please see our class list for times and prices.
