Community Involvement

The mission of Ballet Lubbock is to change lives, and because of our hardworking staff and generous donors, our community outreach programs provide a tangible way to see that mission to fruition.

One facet of our outreach program is our thriving partnership with Communities in Schools where we are able to provide weekly dance classes at nine different elementary schools. At Alderson, Ervin, and Shallowater, we are even teaching dance classes during the school day, making our reach even greater.

In addition, we engage with our community through dance lessons for children from low-income homes who would otherwise not be able to afford the cost of ballet school tuition. These classes take place at Hodges Community Center, Maxey Community Center, Wilson Boys & Girls Club, Parkway Sommerville Center, and on our own stomping—or dancing—grounds at Ballet Lubbock. Tuition for our outreach dance classes is offered either for free or at a very low cost ($5.00 for the semester).

Another engagement activity that we continue to cherish is our work at Covenant Children’s Hospital. On Tutu Tuesdays (every Tuesday) Marcos Antonio, our director of community outreach and an instructor, teaches bedside ballet, as well as ballet in the performing arts theatre to all of the younger patients of the hospital.

Through all of these outreach classes, children learn technique and ballet terminology, as well as soft skills like teamwork, discipline, and critical thinking.
